Handgun 101/NRA First Step Online Program

What to expect:

What happens first? First of all, students will go through the NRA First Step Online Program. They may attend the class in their home or other location where they will be able to handle the representative firearms as displayed on the screen.

After passing the NRA First Steps portion, the students will be exposed to the Weaver and the Isosceles Stances using various pistols and revolvers equipped with laser training devices. This portion lasts for approximately three hours and is a fore runner preceding the students taking and passing the TX License to Carry Live Fire Shooting Test. Students may practice in an indoor location using revolvers and pistols equipped with laser training devices rather than ammo. This exercise trains students in preparation for the Live Fire qualification that must be passed using a .32 caliber or larger firearm, firing live ammunition.

After the laser training portion has been completed, the student will be engaged in the Live Fire portion of the class, located at the designated shooting range with .22 rimfire revolvers and semi-automatic pistols.  This is where the students will again shoot the Texas License to Carry Qualification Pistol test before graduating to a defensive caliber.

The student now has the opportunity to shoot a number of .380, .38 Special, and .45 ACP caliber firearms before deciding on the specific handgun combination to become proficient with prior to qualifying with a defensive caliber on the License to Carry Defensive Qualification Skills Test.  The average student will practice "dry firing" approximately 800 shots with laser equipped firearms. During their target practice rounds they will also consume approximately 300 - .22 shells and generally about 200 center fire cartridges.
