How to Apply for your LTC/CHL License

A Synopsis ... (read this first for basic information)

To receive your Texas LTC Permit this is an abbreviated list of what is required under GC §411.172.

STEP 1:  ELIGIBILITY :

You must be eligible. Basic requirements include these items: (NOTE: this list is not Complete!)

1.)    You must be at least 21 years old.

2.)    You must be a legal resident of the State of Texas for the six months prior, or under certain conditions if you relocate to this state with the intention to establish residency of this state.

3.)    You have not been convicted of a felony or charged with the commission of a Class A or B misdemeanor or equivalent offense.

4.)    You are not chemically dependent and are not incapable of exercising sound judgment with respect to the proper use and storage of a handgun.

5.)    You must be fully qualified under applicable federal and state laws to purchase a handgun.

STEP 2:  REGISTER FOR YOUR LTC CLASS

  STEP 3:  APPLY TO TEXAS DPS

You may apply Online for the Online State Portion of the Application.

STEP 4:   SUBMIT YOUR FINGERPRINTS

   Schedule and Complete Your Fingerprints.  You may Schedule your appointment online.

  The Cost with be $10 with IdentoGO

STEP 5:  GATHER YOUR LTC SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS

Do this after you have completed your class and received your LTC/CHL Class Completion Certificate  (LTC-100 / CHL-100 / LTC-101) from your Instructor, Howard Pearlman, 214 681-6396.

Here are some Additional Documents that may be required to submit to Texas DPS, if you are:

Foreign born

If you were born outside of the U.S., submit a copy of your U.S. Passport, Certificate of Naturalization, or Certificate of Birth Abroad. Submit only one of these documents.

Veteran / Separated Service Member

If you are a prior service member, submit a copy of your DD 214 (copy of "Member 4" / "long" / "unedited" / "undeleted").

Active Duty or Reserve Service Member

If you are Active Duty, Active Reserve, or National Guard, submit a copy of your Military ID (front and back) and one of the following:

·         Copy of current Leave and Earnings Statement (LES).

·         Copy of current Active Duty Orders.

·         Copy of current Enlistment Contract.

·         Letter from your Commanding Officer.

Not a Texas Resident / Out of state

Submit a copy of your Drivers License in Color (front and back).

 

STEP 6:  SUBMIT YOUR SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS TO TEXAS DPS

STEP 7:  WAIT

Await processing by Texas DPS. Depending on the time of year.  Processing takes a few days to several weeks.
